As pointed out elsewhere (http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/home-video/8892-pal-vhs-deck-3.html#post61904), that Thomson model is a POOR choice for VHS/SVHS: mediocre playback quality overall; on top...

Just stating the obvious, but... WCS, if the '1st-gen copy' isn't edited in a major way, you can always resort to the two-pass/assemble method:

(I don't think that's the case here, but) it is always possible that the Hi-Fi audio on the ‘1st-gen copy’ comes from a separate audio source.
These gigs were often taped simultaneously with a...

These HR-S9600EU units (and other JVC models as well) can be picky for Hi-Fi playback, especially for tapes recorded in different (domestic) machines/brands — I've found they tend to fall back to...

@D.Page: These JVC/Philips PAL D-VHS decks may be ‘‘more stable’’ (speedwise?) to cope with the slower LS3 D-VHS mode, but ‘‘more robust’’ (both in the sense of reliability/durability and tape...

From personal, first hand, long-term experience with these — if you're not going to do any DVHS transfers, you'll be better off with the HR-S9600EU/EK.
They tend to put out a (slightly, but...

There were, historically, a few domestic/prosumer (PAL) VHS decks with RGB-out (e.g. Philips VR-813, Thomson DVH-8090).
But the picture quality wasn't so great. VHS and S-VHS top out at S-Video, so...

Good choice.
That Philips model is in some ways a (little) bit better than the JVC it clones: you get the always-on-sight frontal display and a (slightly) less crappy mecha.

Just be aware...

PAL D-VHS machines also had the ‘LS3’ speed. But not Firewire output whatsoever (deliberately left out by the manufacturers).

Also — there was a Thomson PAL DVHS model too (the DVH-8090, not a JVC...

Take a look at the tape itself.
That behaviour is fairly typical of latter JVC players when the tape edges are damaged (even slightly). In fact, these machines have a tendency to do that damage...

Actually, the analogue NTSC standard had (has) 525 scanning lines, of which 480 were visible (originally 483 active lines).
Hence the 525i in analogue nomenclature and 480i in digital terms.
