Hello all!

I recently finished the maintenance on my JVC HM-DR10000 and now I want to enjoy using it. Unlike most of you here (I assume) I mostly use my VCRs for recording video to tape rather than the opposite.
I've been enjoying recording and watching content over S-Video in S-VHS but since this specific VCR is one of the D-VHS machines for the European market I really want to test recording digital video onto it properly.

From what I've read, the Firewire (IEEE1394) input on the back only accepts an MPEG-2 stream (whatever that means, I'm not that informed on earlier digital video so I don't actually know ) so I'm looking for a DVB-T tuner box (I assume some were released in the early to mid 00's) with said Firewire output. I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me a model number or point me in the right direction as Google, like with most older topics, just gives irrelevant and unhelpful results. I'm looking for something like the box in this video, though it's ATSC so it's not gonna work in my situation

As far as I know but I'm not certain, the European D-VHS machines record only MPEG-2 SD and DV via firewire unlike the NA and Japanese machines, What does the instructions manual tel you?

You are correct, this machine can only record DV from the iLink connector on the back. This is normally designed for DV camcorders but I'm pretty sure that some DTV boxes also had the connector, and I'm trying to find one.
The manual makes no mention of the format of the DV connector or it's use case, except showing diagrams where it's connected to a camcorder.

I just looked up the spec page at the service manual here and it has only the STD and LS3 modes, HD would be HS mode, I don't even think it will play commercial D-theater tapes at 25 Mbps, these were the early machines geared towards digital SD I guess.

Yeah, D-Theater never got to the European/PAL market. I don't mind the fact that it's SD (the machine only has S-Video out anyway) and I want to try recording through the DV-in (tried it with a camcorder, worked but recording off the camcorder was boring) with a set-top box to get the experience someone using this set-up at their home would've gotten at the time.
I guess I'll keep using the Google search tools to filter out the irrelevant results...

Edit: The model in the video is the Samsung SIR-T165, there is also this LG one that claims to have an iLink output, but both are ATSC. Can't seem to find an European (DVB-T) equivalent

I lived part of my life in north africa and europe and I don't recall a DVB-T or DVB-S box with firewire out, there was no such use for it other than transferring data between computer and storage devices back then.
I know Motorolla made most of the NA cable boxes with firewire output you may want to focus your search on that brand.

There are better ways to record DVB-T by getting a DVB-T box with a removable flash drive or an internal hard drive, Honestly most digital channels nowadays are widescreen (16/9) it will be hard to record them into a 4/3 SD digital format without severe deformation of the frame even if you find the right DVB-T box with firewire. The resulting recording will be either a horizontally squashed frame or a letterboxed top/bottom frame or an all around letterboxed frame (if the channel is already letterboxed top/bottom from the broadcaster).

One more thing about DV, DV PAL is better than SD MPEG-2 they both have the same luma resolution and chroma sub 4:2:0 but DV uses less compression than MPEG-2, So when you are converting DV to MPEG-2 not only boring as you said but you are degrading the quality of the video.

This page might be of interest to you:

Note that those are computer hardware meant to connect to a firewire port.

Digital VHS had a more developed market (if you can call it that!) in North America than in PAL/DVB-T regions. As the video that I made explains, D-VHS came into being back in 1998 to record DVB-S MPEG-2 signals and was later adapted to record HD MPEG-2 streams off of ATSC and QAM tuners. Finding that Samsung ATSC tuner with Firewire took me a LONG time as they weren't very popular and, as demonstrated, didn't usually work correctly anyway.

JVC only sold one D-VHS model in Europe and it came at the end of the format's life. They didn't even expand D-Theater to planned additional markets (Japanese+ and South Korean NTSC D-VHS decks were region code 2 and 3 respectively).

Indeed, D-VHS was mainly made for ATSC and QAM not DVB-T,C,S, Later on Dish Network in the US teamed up with JVC and came up with a deck that recorded SD satellite channels but can only played back via an analog output to TV (S-Video and composite) no analog inputs and no digital inputs or outputs.
I laugh when I see one on ebay because Dish Network is no longer broadcasting in MPEG-2 not even in MPEG-2 HD, It's all MPEG-4, so that box is a real door stop.

HBB360:
Did you find a way to send MPEG-2 SD/HD TS to JVC HM-DR10000 via DV input?

I would like to connect my PC via Firewire (IEEE1394) and try to record in D-VHS, but so far without success.

If anyone knows how to do this, I'd appreciate it if you could help me out...

Thank you everyone.

The firewire port on those machines supports only SD DV compressed AVI and SD MPEG-2, Don't think Europeans machines have the capability to input MPEG-2 HD via firewire, Try a US/Japan machine.

OK latreche 34...
It is bad information, but is reality (probably).
On the weekend I will try transfer with SD resolution...

I saw videos on Youtube where was record in FHD (1920x1080), but it was on JVC HM-DH30000U/HM-DH40000U...

U at the end of the model stands for US, So only US models are capable of HD as far as I know.

Yes, I know...
U = NTSC only
EU = PAL, NTSC and SECAM
EK = PAL and NTSC, but without SECAM (I think)
