We recently got another PAL deck.
It plays well enough. The alignment is probably off, but not the issue here.
When trying to REW or FF the tape, it does the usual slow-speed winding for a short burst. Then it makes that disengage noise, and high-speed winds.
This unit just makes a "whoom whoom whoom" noise instead of high-speed winding, then shuts off.
It also tried to eat a tape because the tape guides wouldn't get past the hump. A gentle nudge with a finger helped the guide move, and then ejected the tape. But I don't think this is related to the REW/FF issue. It may mean the transport motor is going as well.
My inclination is that it's a belt issue.
But we won't start taking it apart unless the seller gives his okay. Otherwise it'll be returned.
