I cleaned up an old computer and installed Windows 7 in hopes of creating an editing machine. All went well until remembering that MS isn't supporting it any longer. So now I have a fresh install but no way to install any updates (including SP1) that some software requires.

VirtualDub installed fine and seems to be working, but I can't get Hybrid to load at all.

Anyone have any ideas about getting the updates installed? Thanks.

Nice article here: https://kb.plugable.com/general-supp...res-what-to-do

Try that, and report back.

Thanks lordsmurf. I did read the article but haven't had the time to go through the step-by-step yet. It looks like a great article for those wanting/needing to do a fresh install of the unsupported Windows 7.

If you are looking for more of a technical or all in one solution, WSUSOffline is very good.
https://www.wsusoffline.net/

You will need to download version 11.9 specifically since that's the last one that has the option to download Windows 7 updates. I'm not even sure if it can grab them from Microsoft's servers still, but if that article points directly to MS then fair to say it can.

You can build a single ISO or bundle with WSUSOffline, makes it really easy to burn to a DVD or put on a USB stick.

That all said, I have to personally highly recommend you consider moving to Windows 10 or Linux, if your system is connected to the internet. With no new consumer level security patches, you need to be extra careful of new malware and ransomware, among other online threats.

No. Read the first post again: "editing machine"

But a large part of malware/ransomware is stupidity. Random mail attachments, porn/warez sites, not using any sort of script/ad blocking, etc. I'd wager that most users coming to this site are not that dumb.

This topic is very timely for me.
I have an older laptop which I bought as a refurb with W7. The laptop was updated long ago to W10 but to my joy
it retained the W7 installation embedded in the C drive!
When it booted to W7 I couldn’t believe it. I’m looking forward to trying to get my 3 legacy usb capture dongles working.

What a great post.
Somehow I managed to install and update W7x64 service pack 1. The only stumbling block was Net framework but I found it.
Now...both my 850 and 950 work great. Still having issues with my Tevion but I'll get there.

Would be very interested in how you managed to get everything up and running. The NET framework was a stumbling block for me also. Where did you find it? And how did you install the Service Pack? A detailed explanation would be most appreciated!!

My advantage straight out of the gate was a refurb laptop with W7x64 service pack 1 embedded on the C drive.
From there I went through the several install instructions on this thread.
To keep my computer offline I used a thumb drive to download the various elements on another pc.

Net Framework was included in one those packages/downloads.

The .NET 4.5 offline installer should be easy to find, still on official MS site.

I was redo'ing a Win7 Dell laptop right when you posted this thread. My main issue was the Dell drivers (nothing is sorted, their site sucks), and undocumented MS requirements to even install the Dell drivers once located. The OS drive corrupted itself, would not boot, recovery partition damaged. So I had to find the official Win7 x64 SP1 ISO, still working my way through some of the updates. At least now I don't have the Dell crapware, vanilla OS install!
