Probably not. Most DVRs are proprietary closed systems, and makes this impossible.
At very best, some DVRs let you offload content to external drives, and play from that external drive. If you had a DVR with this feature, then a new DVR with a similar feature might be able to also access the saved content. It really depends on whether the hard drive indexes the contents of the drive, or if the DVR did. If the DVR has the index, then that also won't work.
Your best bet is to record the DVR videos to DVDs, using a DVD recorder in realtime.
