When you consider the bad discs you'll end up throwing out, the discs are usually not expensive per disc.

Being in the USA, buying discs online is the ideal solution for you -- Amazon had great prices on the Verbatim DVD+R.
Only $25 shipped: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Q6DMGB4EA6OKLJ

Less than $1 per disc is a good price. I still remember when cheap VHS tapes weren't even just $1 each.

Get those.

When 360K floppy discs were $20 a ten-pack, and a 20 MB hard drive was well over $600 - not so long ago actually.

Generic and off brands are a crap shoot at best. If the content is important, don't scrimp on media. Skipping ink-jet printable may save a bit but avoid using paper labels.

I had one of each.

Well, a lotof floppies, actually.

I still have the 20mb (or the 40mb?) ESDI drive here. I keep it for the nostalgia. The rest of the NEC system is long since gone. However, I still have the user manuals!
