It's something else. It's a wider screen for people who like wider screens so they can open a bunch of application windows and see more of them at one time.
For color and video work, and especially for wide and super-wide monitors, you definitely want an IPS display. You also want to be able to calibrate your monitor to sRGB and D6500 standards. Ask BestBuy about those factors, and they'll just stare at you and look puzzled.

Quality has come downhill, too. Aside from that, mass production finds many ways to reduce component costs, including employee layoffs and starvation wages -- especially when all of the major parts in those monitors are made by only two or three companies and 100% of it is outsourced. For example, most of the front panel display screens and light emitting systems for brands like LG, Dell, NEC, HP, ViewSonic, and ASUS are made by LG to each manufacturers' specs.
