I posted this in reply to your web tutorial but no answer after over a week so I'm assuming it wasn't seen...

Ok, but what if I have a bunch of sites already up and running in the usual cPanel way, is there a way to move them to the

Code:
/home/myuser(myportfolio.com)/domains/myblog.com/
way easily? Or would I have to backup the sites, delete them and recreate them under the better method? These are mainly WordPress sites.

Thanks

Hi there,

You can move them, but you would need to update the document root under the cPanel addon domains option to point to the new path.

Typically, addon & subdomains are stored similar to below:

Code:
/home/user/public_html/subdomain/
OR
Code:
/home/user/public_html/addondomain.com/
What I assume you want to do, is have a directory called "domains" with your addon domains inside of it? Like this:

Code:
/home/user/public_html/domains/someaddondomain.com/

Yes that's correct, to avoid the crosstalk mentioned elsewhere in the forum
If I move the sites and change the path can I delete the domain.maindomain.com add-ons?

There's really no easy way to move addons at all, evern one addon location to another. The best idea is to simply split them, and completely isolate each account.

The current version of cPanel is proving harder to work with. You can no longer delete subdomains tied to addons. So "accountname.maindomain.tld" is not adjustable. If you had a professional site for the primary, and (for the sake of example) a hobby porn site, it would be pornacct.prosite.com. Nice, huh?

You can split a addon manually (Brent does it), and I use the Admin-Ahead plugin on an isolated dev server (because it fubars cPanel at times).

So I'll
- migrate a domain to the dev server,
- split,
- test the split,
- backup then remove the account from the live server,
- then move each account back individually

It takes some time, and a few bucks for the extra cPanel dev server and plugin, but it's overall easier.

Where are you hosted?
For a fee, I can help. Migrate to Veerotech, and I'm sure he'll help.
How many domains are there?
Do you have a reseller account, or just shared?

Addons are a horrible idea leftover from the 90s.

Alas there's no money but I appreciate the offer :-)

The host is InMotion, the sites are mainly nothing, my personal site which is the primary and is really at the moment nothing but a couple of affiliate links to point people to, a Family Tree website that is no longer used by the family but I want to keep the domain. A personal site for my Dad that hasn't used yet, one for my Mom that's a blog she uses sometimes. A blog for my younger son that he uses sometimes and a business site for the 2 Sons that is actually the most important one but we just started it so not too much on it and not much traffic yet.

I use the UpDraft plugin for backups so what I figured I would do is one by one backup a site, delete it, redo it in a subfolder named domains and the restore the site. My personal domain would remain at root (well public_html).

Opinions?

You're going to have a nightmare at some point. I've seen that too much. One of the former Site Staff here, still a Premium Member, had a terrible scenario with family sites. The kid got hacked (I think - it was one of them), and so did the rest of the family. Ugly, ugly mess.

I may have another option for you.
I need to know this:
- What do you currently pay to Inmotion?
- What would you be willing to be for a better service that gives each domain an account?
- Are you "locked in" (prepaid, not really locked in) for a year or more?

Unfortunately I just paid for a full year (although I am still within their 90 day return policy).

Part of the reason I chose them were good reviews (including from this site) and I wanted someone I'm recommending to my company as well so I would know the service. They are probably going to go to a VPS and InMotion's pricing is quite good. I was with HostGator and they are currently with HostGator.

Price is a huge factor for me (I'm broke LOL) and I really want to be with a service that I can also put the company on assuming they move (they will, they're fed up with the email problems at HostGator).

I paid $90 for the year which will go up to I think $160 or so the next year.

Also, they moved all the sites for me (I think 8 total, but a total of less than 5mb) for free, and all my questions were answered immediately in chat so although I haven't been with them long I have been quite happy so far.

What's your suggestion?

So the company definitely wants to move and we are planning for September 2 or 3 or so to do it. What is your suggestion for my personal sites and are they comparable in VSP's as InMotion?

Thanks for your site and your help :-)

Dave

I've PM'd you about another option.

Tell me more about the VPS. What about the company site would require it? If you actually went the VPS route, a company like LiquidWeb, WiredTree, or Knownhost may be better than InMotion. It really depends on what's need, to know who is best.

We don't need a whole lot at the moment, current using 12mb of space with about 130gb of transfer a month. We're just tired of issues with the site slowing down and email issues from someone else on the server spamming etc. With a VPS we have room to grow if needed and we're separate from other people's issues.
