this is a frame comparo between my new-old (1996) panasonic NV-HS1000 (s-VHS/PAL) with TBC and my old (early 90's) toshiba V-880MS (VHS multisystem). the panasonic has slightly, but noticeably better details, especially in dark. the panasonic's TBC works well and makes the vertical lines straight (see the time/date). there is also a smoother play with no duplicated frames in spots where there is bad tape. The TBC also effectively does some mild noise reduction compared with TBC off.

the panasonic's TBS works so well, I see no need for external TBC. The only difference BVTBC8 makes, it helps some with the discolored lines on the very top overscan.

in short, i'm very pleased with the NV-HS1000. its 220V power supply works fine on 120V. the deck is easy to repair (i just fixed the power supply), and has no problematic electrolytic caps from what i can determine.
looks like i can finally restart my long overdo capture project.

Glad it's working for you. We'd like to see an untouched capture directly from the video rather than resized screen captures, if you want to demonstrate more original detail.

Suggestion: The menu shown below should save some time and trouble with video images from VirtualDub.
"Video..." -> "Copy source frame to clipboard" or press Ctrl+1
"Video..." -> "Copy source frame to clipboard" or press Ctrl+2

Using either of those menu items captures only the frame, without capturing the entire VDub window:
