So far I have one of each, the AG-1980 and the AG-5710. At least with how my small setup currently is, I plan to use an edit controllers to where I don't physically have to be in front of the machines each time except for loading and ejecting tapes. I kinda wished now that I had either two 1980's or 5710's. I've scored a really nice AG-A96 edit controller but only works on the 1980's. The 5710's use a different controller via the RS-232C interface.

I don't plan to use the controller to edit between the machines since they won't be as accurate, they will mostly be used for remote deck control since I have the decks rack mounted.

I'd never do it. Automation just means more can go wrong. Given the value and difficulty in getting a AG-1980 to work flawlessly, I'd rather just manually oversee the process.
