I know it's a vague thread title, but I'm not deep enough into this yet to want anything specific. I currently have a Panasonic NV-HV60, I'm looking to go with something that's actually decent. JVC looks like it has the best reputation, but I'm basically after anything that's listed in the VCR Buying Guide that has a TBC and such.

I've found a JVC SR-S388E on eBay, but I'm not optimistic about the sort of condition it's in (photo shows a large dent in the top), and it doesn't seem to come with the picture settings other JVC machines have, so I'd rather see if there's anything else out there.

Budget is in the ballpark of $AU500. Lower is better (obvious statement is obvious), but I don't want to be going too much higher than that unless there's a really good reason to.

Update: Found and purchased a deck.

PAL VCR from the Buying Guide
"VCR" is a protected designation of grundig and Philips and should be changed here.

I still have all 3 VCR Philips + Grundig

No. VCR is also "videocassette recorder": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Videocassette_recorder.

Furthermore, "VHS" has been used interchangeably with "VCR" for at least 30+ years now. You can't unring that bell. To most laymen, Betamax was "beta", and VHS was "VCR".
