Hi,

I’m new to the forum. Glad to be here. I was given a Panasonic DMR-ES40V VHS/DVD recorder recently and am having an issue with it. When I turn it on, the interface screen is black and white with a black bar down the center, and the image is repeated on both sides of the screen. This also occurs during VHS and DVD-r playback. Please see photos: 5D893A29-6EA0-466B-85F8-93E65856DE38.jpg

I hooked it up via component cables.
Any idea what might be causing this?
Any help is truly appreciated.
Thanks,
J

I would double check the Component cables connected to the TV, you may have a Y, Cr, or Cb swapped out of order. Also check the order connected to the ES40 one of those may not be correct.

Matching up the color of the Component connector to the color of the cable at the end connecting to the device should keep the Component signals straight through Y-to-Y, Cr-to-Cr, Cb-to-Cb (or RGB to RGB).

If any are swapped the Vertical Sync signal combined with say the Y-channel may not be where it is supposed to be and the TV may try to make up for it by interpreting a 480i as extra wide progressive signal at a slow frame rate.. two fields become side by side in a single frame. (if you don't follow the reasoning.. try disconnecting the cables and connecting them again verifying the colors of the cables match the colors of the connectors).

ON second thought.. your TV may have a Component and an RGB mode.. make sure it is setup for the right mode for the cabling or the same thing can happen because its supposed to react that way when misconfigured. The ES40 is unlikely to have an extra RGB mode because its older and stuck to more conventional standards. Later TVs and Projectors came with an assortment of (Sync-On channel, modes).

A simpler test might also be to just try a different monitor or TV to rule out the TV and rule in the fault is the ES40.
