I have a Sony DVP-S560D CD/DVD player which will not play any disc, CD or DVD. When I insert the disc, I go a No Disc error on the front panel. There is no spinning of the disc at all, just the error message.

I found one video online with a similar issue although in this video the disc spins but still reads no dic. I did manage to disassemble the unit, and cleaned off the laser, however there was no real visible dirt or dust on the laser prior to cleaning it.

The video talks about making a small adjustment to the potentiometer, and on some videos it is clear where the potentiometer is located, but I’m trying to figure out where it is on my laser assembly, and I have attached a photo which perhaps someone can point me in the right direction.

Your reader has likely failed.

People are overly concerned with how long discs last, but the real problem is the players. Lasers in players have a finite life, sometimes as little as 2-5 years. Unlike discs, which will last decades. So many of us will have wallets of discs, and nothing to play them on in the future. As a society, we've moved away from discs. Discs are the new tapes.

So given the price of replacement players I guess no point tinkering with this relic. Now on to my VCR and Combo units and their issues!

Although I do have to wonder if it is truly dead. The videos I watched all showed a similar problem, and I suspect those units were technically dead as well, but in each a tweaking of the potentiometer brought it back to life.
