Plugged it in yesterday only to emit a big POP with a flash inside. Fuse didn't blow and there is no obvious part that exploded based on a quick inspection. Oh well, threw it back in the box to deal with some other time. Its one of my "B grade" backup decks anyway. It also has bad reel brakes and will eat tapes if you aren't careful with it.

It's most likely one of those PCB mounted power fuses they look like a transistor but they only have two legs, The question is what else failed for that to pop like that?

Condolences. Had it served you long?

I still mourn my 9800, though I hope to one day correct the DD issues. It was one of my best decks.
Also owner of multiple failed AG1980s, again (grrr...), but Deter will soon have those.

I got this deck on a trade, so I really don't have much into it. I've had it for 7 years now, but its rarely been used due to the reel brake issues. I mostly got it to see what the dynamic drum is all about, plus to see the differences between it and the later models.
