Hi all, I found some old VHS and VHS-C tapes laying around at my parents house and decided to buy a VCR to play and digitalize them. I purchased a JVC S-VHS HR-S7611EU off Ebay since it's apparently one of the nicer units which has a TBC module build in. The seller claimed it was fully operational and won't refund so I'll try repairing it myself.

The first time I inserted a VHS, it got rejected and was stuck inside the VCR. I opened it up to retrieve my VHS and saw that the left side of the eject bay didn't lift. After wiggling the bay a bit both sides went up again and I was able to eject my VHS.

When I insert a VHS now, the VCR takes the tape and loads it as expected, starts to spin but then shuts off. The display doesn't mention any errors. When I restart the device it spins the tape again but eventually shuts off again. Any ideas? If I press eject the tape comes out as expected.

It takes a couple tries to get the VCR to accept the tape, the first 2-3 times it usually just spits out the VHS again.

I tried multiple tapes, both VHS-C with an adapter and full size VHS tapes. All of them cause the same issue. They play just fine on my old camrecorder.

Video of what's happening inside:

Your best option is to return the VCR to the seller and get the refund, all what you need to do is to file a claim with eBay.

Repairing a VCR is a career not something that can be taught over a public forum. Buy a certified VCR from here, Lordsmurf has them from time to time, It may cost you an investment at the start but you can recoup some of that money when done with your project and sell the VCR.

I know I sound like discouraging you but believe me repairing VCR's is complicated and requires knowledge and experience, I can list you over 99 reasons to why the VCR shuts down and I have no clue which one is going to be because I don't have the VCR next to me.

Your video freezes. Attach sample clips to the forum, don't hotlink to random sites that randomly alter the clips.

I have some similar issues with some similar JVC decks. As stated, it's complex, and could be anything. I've been troubleshooting these for a while, still haven't found the culprit, and I know quite a bit about JVC VCRs.

Who was this purchased from? We need to know, in case he/she/it ever sells more crappy "tested/working" (BS!) VCRs.

It can be a long drawn-out ugly process, but filing a claim on eBay is probably what you need to do here. Understand that eBay is mostly a video gear (VCRs, TBCs, etc) dumping ground, not a place for quality used gear. It's gambling, not buying.
