I had to remove the dynamic drum from a JVC S-7600U (to adjust and check the plastic gears due to the dreaded shut off problem). When I replaced the dynamic drum the machine once again ran as expected, however now on playback I have this nasty horizontal band of distortion. It's about an inch tall, runs across the entire screen and is present on every tape I try.
For those of you experienced with VCR repair does this appear to be a damaged head problem. Or could it possibly be a tracking problem? Is there any type of adjustment possible on this machine?
I try to be very careful when working inside the VCR and don't believe the dynamic drive was bumped or jostled other than removing the screws. It had a good picture back when it was working but obviously something happened when either removing or replacing the assembly.
BTW, I also have a 9900U which uses the same dynamic drum, so as long as I had the cover off I swapped the 2 assemblies and ended up with the same problem. Now the 7600 looks great but the 9900 has the line through the picture. So the problem has to be with the heads, right?
The attached picture illustrates the problem. You can see the distortion about 1/4 of the screen down from the top.
