Footage would probably be a better thing to test with, S-Video is a great system poorly executed in terms of the connector, it's flimsy and weak and why we've either purchased or fitted machines with locking broadcast connectors. The signal was used in broadcast, but not with the domestic connector as it's a very delicate little thing.
Replacing the connector is a bit of a faff but it's not beyond the realms of most keen DIY'ers, on our domestic machines with S-Video we've opted to install direct cables between the PCB in the player and whatever TBC they're paired with, then it's all broadcast from there.
