Unfortunately it seems my VCR has an issue with its S-Video connection in the back,
https://streamable.com/3lgnhr
as you can see in the video with me trying to adjust the cable in the back of the unit to find the right spot for it to work. The bad thing is that it can go to a bad position during a capture, losing the color or outright all the image in the middle of it, not always but it can happen.

Is this a common issue? Would it be easy to fix? Has anyone else got this problem? The unit otherwise works great

I remember some post here about connector issues on a JVC but can't find it right now. It's probably just a bad solder joint, which would be simple to fix on it's own though unless it's very different to the S8600, the connectors sit on a PCB that's soldered in and the 3D Digital/SVHS board may be in the way of accessing it as well.

Thankfully, since this is a PAL deck, there is a very easy workaround: You can use a Scart adapter with S-Video out on the top scart plug and set the switch on the back to Y/C and get S-Video out from there.

Yes it's in the way of two soldered PCBs, it's not easy to access it

For the SCART workaround, I have a SCART to S-video and audio cable

the switch is on Y/C (I also tried the other position anyway)

but I don't get video signal from S-Video. Maybe should I get one of the common SCART converters, would they do the trick instead?

Yeah that adapter should work, you want one with an in/out switch on it. If the cable you have is not labeled I suspect the cable may be for input rather than outputs (input and output use different scart pins).

The adapter did the trick, I'm noticing though a bit of difference in the picture, I don't know though which is better.

Useful, but those menus usually are something like 4.43 (long story) so they're not always the best judge of picture quality because they're a compromise of the signal systems, at least often the JVC ones are.

Footage would probably be a better thing to test with, S-Video is a great system poorly executed in terms of the connector, it's flimsy and weak and why we've either purchased or fitted machines with locking broadcast connectors. The signal was used in broadcast, but not with the domestic connector as it's a very delicate little thing.

Replacing the connector is a bit of a faff but it's not beyond the realms of most keen DIY'ers, on our domestic machines with S-Video we've opted to install direct cables between the PCB in the player and whatever TBC they're paired with, then it's all broadcast from there.

Here is a shot with both motion and static elements

Direct S-video (interlaced and deinterlaced with mpv default, yadif at 50fps)

SCART S-video

Again I don't see a clear better, SCART just seems a bit brighter, enough to have the assurance it won't be in a bad position during a capture
