Strange. I don't recall any NTSC models lacking s-video. I'm guessing you may have a PAL model?
The PAL models probably focused on SCART (RGB), which is technically superior to s-video. RGB is essentially component video (though not identical).
Note that SCART only handles SD video. Component carries HD, too.
Coax is worse than
< composite, which is worse than
< s-video, which is worse than
< component or SCART (both RGB formats), which is worse than
< HDMI
