DVD recorders not only need to playback commercial DVDs with the highest video quality, but they also need to record video on a DVD and play it back with the highest quality. The input signal can be TV signals (which often are noisy—especially in the case of U.S. analog cable), low-end VCRs and analog camcorders. This variety of incoming video signals represent a colossal challenge for the DVD recorder designers in terms of signal tracking, input filtering and optimized video compression.

I'll assume there's no question here.

Thanks for posting and sharing this. (And for properly attaching the PDF to the forum.)
It's very interesting.

Very cool, this was a fun read. I'd love to see more documentation and info on the chipset used in all the swanky DVD recorders.

Thank you. I'm happy to help.
LSI is fantastic.
A home to record from TV using a Liteon LVW-5026.
The DVDr has no DVB. Using a digital decoder connected to the Scart video.

Yesterday they would play a show with a lot of video noise.
Registered with the Liteon in LP mode and the noise was gone.
Incredible.:)
Liteon has not, however, s-video IN:(
Liteon is less than JVC, but it does its job

I believe I can add to this discussion. The reason that DVD recorders can record the distorted timing of VCR's has a lot to do with the influence of an engineer, Ronald Snoeck. He investigated this problem thoroughly and then worked as a consultant to electronics companies to ensure that they could record VCR's properly. He explains in his webpage why the VCR timing is different. This is useful knowledge for what a TBC must address.

Strange. I don't recall any NTSC models lacking s-video. I'm guessing you may have a PAL model?

The PAL models probably focused on SCART (RGB), which is technically superior to s-video. RGB is essentially component video (though not identical).
Note that SCART only handles SD video. Component carries HD, too.

Coax is worse than
< composite, which is worse than
< s-video, which is worse than
< component or SCART (both RGB formats), which is worse than
< HDMI

In the instructions of the LITEON LVW-5026:

"Connection of a decoder," notes
1) When connected to the decoder, there will be a signal output S-Video recorder dvd if the dvd recorder is turned off.
2) This dvd is not compatible with S-video input signal on the SCART socket.

"Recording from VCR" Note As to point 1) above:confused:

JVC DR-M10 has scart s-video input:thumb:

The technical specifications of the manual is written: SCART2: CVBS / RGB in
