Yes, this guy got it right on the money.. My VCR continues to lock up the gears and I can't figure for the life of me why this happens as I have lubed the gears and such.. Only thing I can figure is there is a bad bearing somewhere..

this is a TEMPORARY FIX!!!
the gears lock up be cause they get hairline cracks in them.
this is a major downside to the dynamic drum decks

hi Volks...nice big capital letters you are using there....no-one is saying it wont happen again. But it is certainly the problem.
im yet to get to the very bottom of whether it is a gear that cracks or a bearing that faults. but perhaps by the time the problem becomes "unfixable" for many we should all have 3D printers in our bedrooms and can print out a copy of a new gear to replace?
wouldn't that be cool
cheers,
Blackout

lol
i have taking several apart and always the same thing with the cracked gears.
the plastic just gets old and brittle - i dont think you can do anything to prevent it the only way you can get the gears is to buy the "drum final assembly"
i was lucky to find an NOS one for one of my decks - but it was around $150
even if you could make a gear trying to align them again would be a exercise in futility
i have however found a sort of workaround:
remove the motor and lower(non cracked) assembly from the bottom of the DD
plug it directly to the motherboard connector
install a non DD head assembly - like from a sr-v10u or 9911
doing this the deck works but obviously loses the DD capitally and it will occasionally shut down if you are FF /rewind while playing

there would assumedly be some kind of "position sensor" under there that determines how far the gears have turned to lift the head. you could possibly disconnect the sensor ...as well as the motor that turns the gears? that's what I would personally do, and then when you ff it just has the good 'ole bars across the screen like every other vhs in the world instead of the smooth play of the Dynamic Drum. so the head will no longer TILT when you press FF or FR...but at least your VCR wont go into shutdown mode any more like a hysterical golden-haired step-child...anyone tried this successfully and taken some pics of the procedure?

you cant remove the motor and sensor completely -the vcr will auto shutdown immediately if you do.
you have to do as i described
just remove the little motor and cage from the bottom of the DD- leave the gears that are attached to it on it
and just plug it into the motherboard and install an non-DD head assembly

are you sure they sensor is not a normally closed ? so to bypass the sensor you would just tie the wires together? if this was true, then if you removed the sensor and just left the wires open it would naturally auto-shutdown which is what you are experiencing....just an idea.

the motor/sensor assembly plugs directly in the board - no wires.
the sensor looks like a hall effect switch and 1 gear is cammed to it. - dont take the motor/sensor assembly apart - if you upset the timing it wont work anymore.
the only way ive been able to get it to work is to do exactly as i described
if anyone else wants to try this i have some spare non-DD head assemblies here.
they must be from a similar S-VHS deck with flying erase head and there are 2 different type stator boards so sometimes you have to swap those out.

I didn't know it was cracked.

yes they crack - i have taking many apart and always the same issue.
your first indication is the DD gets very loud when actuated - they are fairly quiet when in good order.
this is why i dont trust DD decks even when using the temporary fix - how do you know the gears are timed correctly - they may have jumped teeth. better to have a fixed head than a DD that is out of phase

Can't we just superglue the cog back together?

This seems to have happened to my JVC HR-S9400, but the gears are stuck. Can't get them to rotate. I tried to remove the drum so I could take a closer look at the plastic gears, but didn't know how to loose the lower flat cable. Does anyone know?
I did how ever see that there are quite a few more gears under the drum. :/
Could this be something repairable in the close future with 3D-printers?

the ribbon flat cables have a socket that just slides in. sometimes there is a securing clip, sometimes you just need to pull on them (I pull on them slightly sideways to get them started) and they pull out....you just need to be confident to pull. sometimes one end of the ribbon is secured and only the other end is able to be removed (they save on a removable clip), but at the very least they always allow one end to be removed

(the way the media talks about 3D printing it sounds like we should be able to just hit "print" and a whole brand new JVC7600 will be able to be printed out.)
but yeah the first to take the faulty gear that we are all experiencing and to print it out please contact me, I will order one from you as well!
Cheers,
Blackout

I want a 3D printer mostly to "print" weapons for action figures -- both customs and replacements.

they are plastic gears pressed onto a metal shaft
and even if you got a gear it would be next to impossible to align everything
these where probably assembled on some kind of jig
they where never meant to be serviceable - they is why JVC only sold the entire assembly

its not a cap issue.
its some kind of solenoid thats jammed. its a mechanical problem.
when i turn on my good 7600AM with the front power button i hear a solenoid "whirr" for a second. that sound is what is missing from the bad 7600AM. something is jammed or one of the gears not reset properly.
more investigation....
Edit: ok i have figured it out! problem solved!!!!
there are small black gears that jamm below the heads. they adjust the head angle. look at the second pic i have posted, i am pointing at them with the tip of my screwdriver. all you need to do is turn on your VCR whilst giving these black gears a roll with your finger...and they will jump to life and reset. And your VCR will stay on@!!!!!
then its a matter of dropping some grease on the gears.
my unit is now up and running but i wander if it is just a jammed gear issue long-term or rather more serious in that the solenoid that runs the gears might be worn. time will tell over the upcoming days...but this is a great result !!!! please try this with your units

Although this is a few years old, this helped me out on 2 broken recorders, they work back again, thanks!

Some Sony cassette Walkman units have a similar problem - a plastic cog with a brass insert cracking. One person who has access to top tier 3D printers tried to make a new cog, however the finish and action of the new printed part was not satisfactory - sadly we are not yet at a stage where the quality is high enough. Maybe in 10 years - but don't hold your breath.
Sadly I am aware that most major manufacturers actually design in 'faults' in that the drive gears become fragile and 'break' without seemingly much use. Its not in their interest to make things last a long time.
