I recently got two Panasonic AG W1's. However, one of them is completely dead and won't power up at all. What's wrong with this and how can it be fixed? Also, is a working W1 worth any money?

power supply is probably borked.
not worth your time - sell it as-is on ebay
none of the multis are much good
the 4000 and 5000 Samsungs bring decent money on ebay, but i wouldnt use either on my tapes.
if you want to do PAL tapes get one of the recommend PAL S-VHS decks with TBC

I checked out the fuse in the PSU, and it seems ok, so what could it be? I would like to get this working.

bad caps or other parts of the power board probably.
it will cost more than it is worth to fix, unless you can test and solder board components
those deck only go for around $100 fully working.

It's good for SECAM, but that's about it. Even then, I'd rather find a rare and expensive JVC S-VHS that can play SECAM, if I had a lot of them.

We had a few AG-W2 or AG-W3 decks (forget which) a few years ago. Never really used them, as the quality was not up to our standards. I think Rocky Mountain Labs bought one, and somebody on the forum bought another. I forget the details, too long ago.

We still have a Samsung rebadge or the W1/2/3 (again, forget). It's okay for some tapes that hate JVC transports, but it has lower quality for the picture.

These are just VHS VCRs, consumer grade, not S-VHS, not prosumer or professional.

So if Panasonic and Samsung worldwide VCR's are so bad what would you recommend for "your tapes" in PAL. Are you selling something that is so good? Please let me know. Very interested and interesting. Thanks.

Changing the capacitors is cheap if you know basic stuff and buy the good ones for extra pennies. See if they are bulging or measure the ESR if you have a meter. I do not remember having a problem with caps that were in units made in Japan, even after 20 plus years. That's just me and I could be wrong. Cheers.

for PAL use a Panasonic or JVC Super-VHS deck with TBC.
they are not that hard to find

see Lordsmurfs' list:

On a different note the Samsung5000 is a very good VCR if you know what to do to prevent to go bad. They were very expensive at that time and they sell for a fraction now. The sad part is the QC of certain parts in my humble opinion is questionable. Sure you can find some that are very expensive. Good luck with that. At the end of the day it is all about perception. Cheers.

Thank you for the reply.

Very nice list.
JVC 9500 is probably the last one in that series that was still made in Japan. Why not highlighted?
Thanks.

Japan doesnt really mean anything
all AG-1980's where built in Japan and they probably have the worst cap problems of any VCR
the 9500 lacks some of the filters of the 9600-9911

the Samsung lacks TBC and that alone makes it not desirable for doing tape transfers.
also lacks S-video and is only a SQPB

I am sure the Samsungsv5000 does have S-VHS output, but that probably means nothing and probably is not even consider a VCR by some either. In terms of quality I see more and more people like stuff proudly made in China ,Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. That's a interesting change. I like this forum, it teaches me a lot.

the Samsung 5000 does NOT have S-video
it will play S-vhs recorded tapes but only in SQPB(normal VHS resolution)
i have had a few and they are a lousy decks for NTSC or PAL
they are only useful for exotic formats like SECAM

The Samsung has SCART and composite.

When you need a Panasonic transports (problematic EP mode tapes), it's nice to have, but is NOT worth the $600 we originally paid when new in 2000. I'd rather import a Panasonic PAL deck. I already have PAL JVC S-VHS decks (8965).
