1986 VCR NIB never opened plug and play? Or preventive maintenance first?

Hey there,

I just bought a 1986 RCA VCR that is still unopened. I realize this is not a great machine, but I am excited about it for aesthetic reasons. Also looking for a JVC HRS8000U which is my dream VCR, and this RCA will be my entry-level model in the meantime. Should I do anything special to it before the first play? Or just let it rip?

Thanks!

Well no mechanical parts will be worn but grease WILL have changed from when new. Whether this will impede operation you will not know until you try it. Some JVC greases from the 80's set like stone whether used or not and I guarantee you that at least one or two small value capacitors (may or may not be in an area that effects the picture or operation) will have dried out / be leaking.

Belts will have set with the shape of the pulley and the loading belt especially will not take kindly to any deforming. I see NOS decks exactly the same as used decks - turn it on and see what it does. It may work for a bit before failing or not work at all. Keep us posted though and do share a photo or two.

This may be obvious, but make sure the first tapes you try are not valuable in case they are eaten.

Why is a JVC HRS8000U your dream VCR? :weird:
