Panasonic NV-HS 1000 pinch roller issue?
 

Hello all,

I have just purchased a Panasonic NV-HS 1000 off ebay, basically I opened it to give the heads a clean before I started and this is what I was presented with. The pinch roller was barely on. when when I gave it the smallest clean it came right off...what appeared to be holding it in place looks to be a piece of plastic tubing that has been cut to size, then crushed at one end; then pushed into place once the roller was "in"

is this normal, or is someone trying to pull a fast one on me!?!?!?!?!?!

also...erm. how do I get this the pinch roller back on?!

Pana NV-HS 1000 is identical to the Pana AG 4700 + Loewe OC3800.
There is an identical model of Blaupunkt, name I have forgotten but at the moment.

The seller was either clueless or dishonest. Take your pick. It's eBay, and that happens too often. Time to get a hefty partial refund from the seller, then turn around and get it fixed somewhere. Or return it at their costs. Or use the eBay buyer protection.

If this person sells lots of video hardware, you need to post who this is. This community takes a dim view of eBay con artists, and we spread the word on bad-faith sellers.

I ended up having to send it back, it doesn't look as though he's sold a VHS before; hopefully he will be more careful if there is a next time!!

I got a full refund + pnp, instead I picked up a JVC HR-S8965 which appeared on ebay a few days later. it's just coming up to room temp now so looking forward to testing it out!

I have the 7965. The 8965 is nearly identical. That's a nice unit.

So i have a very quick question about this 8965.

The Panasonic had a "sharpness" feature; this one doesn't seem to have this.
I'm hoping that somebody is about to turn around to me and say that the sharpness isn't needed, because this JVC is putting out such a beautifully raw signal that you can get the same "effect" (if that is all the panasonic was doing?) by sticking the resulting avi file through adobe preimer with a sharpness plug-in turned on....

or something to that effect.

there is no question that the output from this 8965 is far more stable and "clean" than the Panasonic ever was, but the missing "sharpness" feature concerns me. tell me I have nothing to worry about, please!!!

Here's a comparison of the two! It's just hard seeing past the Panasonics stupid purple lines it seemed to be inserting along with it's jaggedness....trying to imagine if they weren't there; would the picture look as "soft" as the JVCs

or as I said earlier, is it not "soft" at all and that is how it is supposed to look!
Only other thing i've noticed with the JVC is that the high frequencys seem to have been dropped out out of the sound, it's slightly more muffled than the Panasonic.

Still try some others Recorder.
Possible that there still can save what with Avisynth / VDub. [Clip Pana]

Just a comment about the Panasonic roller for future readers (I realise that you sent your machine back). The correct method of holding the roller is via a small white plastic tube, which is friction fit. This splits over time (most of my machines show the start of the crack or split).

The only 'buyable' cure is to order a new roller with the metal part complete - the plastic bit is not available separately. If you have suitable tough tube you can make your own, but that must be secure or it will just drop off as you saw!

As to the sound, JVC machines are more muffled than Panasonic. I don't know why this is - even the HiFi soundtrack is more muffled on the JVC (and the low frequencies are down a bit too). As to picture quality for PAL machines the Panasonic decks do seem better - my experience only.

Many thanks for the reply though! I think I'm happy with the player overall so I will be keeping it; it's certainly miles ahead of the standard VHS player I used to have.

The JVC is not really "soft" in most cases, but it's that the Panasonics have the sharpness artificially pumped up.

Only JVC linear/mono is more muffled. I also have no idea why this happens. The stereo/HiFi on both Panasonic and JVC is fine. In fact, JVC tends to be better, as the Panasonics often distort it from too loud a volume. Again, not sure why. It's just a design flaw, I guess.

I was hoping you would say something like that, lordsmurf! Loving this jvc! :)
