My capture project is going well (with a few hiccups), but I have a few questions regarding VCR maintenance. I have about 125-150 tapes to go thru. My VCR is a JVC 9900u. I sent the unit in for service about 3 to 4 years ago, with little to no use until now. How often should I clean the heads using a simple method of 91% alcohol and a clean piece of paper? The tapes range from 1985 thru early 2000's. I don't want to over do it, or risk damaging anything, but I also want the unit to capture at 100% efficiency.

Thanks.

Clean it when your notice problems -- never before.

Every 50 or so tapes, I open and visually inspect my units for debris on the heads and in the transport.

If something is wrong with the video, and it effects every VHS tape, especially ones that were previously "fine", then it may be in need of a cleaning.

For only 150 tapes, you should be fine, assuming non shed oxide inside. (You have my sympathy if it does, as that's is a nasty mess to clean up!)
