Hi, I have a VCR that eats tapes. Taking it apart taught me that the takeup reel does not spin when in playback mode, but it does spin when I fast-forward (or rewind). The VCR does not have an idler belt, it's just gears. I read some online guides, but most link this problem to a worn out idler belt. Does anybody know what the problem might be in this case?

I wanted to reply, just so you don't think you've been ignored...

... but I have no idea. Of course, I've never been big into VCR repair. Hopefully another members will have seen this, and have some advice. Finding the service manual will probably be key.

If you are still wanting to fix this, this is a G deck so no belts as you say. But there are moving drive gears that swing depending on mode and also a clutch. I would say that either grease has gone hard preventing something from moving or a part has become faulty such as a plastic part broken off. It is not possible to say what is wrong with yours but I do suggest you look at the official G Deck alignment video I put on YouTube (search Panasonic G deck) which will show you what is supposed to do what. G deck is solenoid driven (for mode change) then capstan motor completes the change and drives the deck. Complex decks but work well if in good order.
