Black lines appearing on all video playback

Hi guys,

So I have two Panasonic VHS players, one I had for a while and was fine until last month when black horizontal lines began appearing on the screen during playback of any tape. After running a tape cleaner through it and then attempting to clean the heads manually with rubbing alcohol, I assumed it had just had seen better days.

So, I bought another Panasonic VHS player - all was fine until yesterday when the same horizontal black lines appeared again. I ran a head cleaner through it (a tape version) but haven't manually tried to clean the heads yet as it didn't work on the other player.

Now, the weird thing is that I played a tape on the second VHS player yesterday that I played on my old VHS player before the black lines appeared on it - basically, I'm wondering if it's possible for a video tape to damage the heads or something along those lines.

It just seems weird that both players have the same problem after playing the same tape through them. Any ideas regarding this issue? Is it fixable?

Many, many thanks for your help and time with this!

Do you have an example to share? Black lines could be a tape defect or an electronic issue.

Thank you!

I see some tearing and what looks like dirty heads. Sometimes a tape will deposit a sticky residue that will not clear with manual cleaning unless you use isopropyl on paper (slightly abrasive). Using just chamois is not enough in such a case, the dirt needs to be 'abraded' away.

The tearing may be how your TV reacts with the low/poor signal from the VCR, but to start with I suggest using ispropyl on clean paper and cleaning the heads manually. Make sure you read up on how to do this - look on YouTube too. Its a start, and I would try using a known good tape for your testing, not the tapes you have been using.

Thanks for your help! I tried cleaning the heads today with paper and some Omega head cleaner which doesn’t need seem to have worked - do you think it’s because the isopropyl in the head cleaner is too weak/diluted?

Sorry, I don't know that brand. I can only suggest 100% IPA and paper, and beyond that I would need to see the unit, try a few tapes, check out the heads, tape path, settings etc.
