To paraphrase Forest Gump, stuff happens. (And to let folks know unhappy stuff happens to other people as well, no one has a monopoly on bad news. Please excuse my venting.)

My (was) trusty old 35 mHz Heathkit dual trace w/ sweep delay oscilloscope just smoked my basement air as another of its tantalum capacitors (this one 10 mfd, on the vertical deflection board) failed with a bit of noise and a lot of smoke. Another project put on hold while I decide whether to repair or replace. It may be time for a wider bandwidth digital scope they cost a lot less than the Heath did new when I bought the kit.

It is about 40 years old now, so I guess I got my money's worth of use from it.

I know that punch-to-the-gut feeling you get when hardware fails.

I recently lost an AVT-8710 myself. Overheated.

Now I'm really glad that I hung on to a few spare TBCs, as stuff like this was inevitable.
