Problem fan Sony DSR 1500P?
 

Hello everyone. I tried to change the standard fan mounted on board my vcr dvcam Sony DSR 1500p (a Panaflo FBA06T12M - 12V - 0,19A) with a quieter one (AAB Cooling Super Silent Fan - 12V - 0,16A) but, as soon as I turn it on the vcr, after about a second, turns off. Failing to overcome the problem I reassembled the original Panaflo fan and now the DSR 1500P is working properly (but it makes a lot of noise). Why does the new silent fan turn off the machine? Yet both fans operate at 12V (even if the AAB has a slightly lower amperage than the Panaflo) and have three conductors (black-red-yellow wires) arranged in exactly the same way (which I scrupulously respected in connecting the molex to the plug of supply). How can I solve the problem? Thank you all. :hmm:

Three wires on a fan typically are positive, negative supply and tachometer (rpm) output.

Are the fans you have rated for the same rpm? Often quieter fans are lower rpm.

The DSR internal controls may be looking at the fan RPM and if detected lower than expected it shuts down as a self protection measure.

The "Panaflow...12M" medium speed fan speed might be around 3600 RPM while the AAB might be more like 2400 rpm.

The easy solution is to use an exact replacement. More work is to find one that is rated for the same RPM and airflow while quieter.

In fact, I suspected this: I respected the polarities to the letter (red = power, black = negative, yellow = tachometer) but the AAB fan declares a maximum of 2500 rpm. while of the Panaflo I was not able to find the relative data to the revolutions / minute (but from the noise generated I think also I arrive at least to 3500). Unfortunately I didn't even find a 60x60x15 fan that reaches 3500 rpm. without exceeding 20 dB.

I've seen some 60x60x15 fans that do 3200 rpm and 24 dB noise.

Do you know at what minimum fan speed the VCR needs to see? And the CFM air flow it needs to adequately cool?

With a bit of bailing wire and duct tape you might be able to mod a different size fan to work although it might look funny.

I wonder if the OEM fan was just getting old and noisy (e.g., bearing wear), and whether or not a new one might be quieter.

Unfortunately, no: nothing was written about the DSR 1500 service manual; I even requested information from a Sony broadcast product service center but they didn't know (or wanted) to say anything. Adapting a larger fan is not physically possible: the fan is screwed to the feeder container inside an inclined "hole" and if I put a larger one the container does not close. The Panaflo installed as standard has already collected 13 years of dust on an external OB Van and this has certainly increased the noise level. I don't know if 3200 rpm is enough ... as soon as I can, however, I try to get one, even though 24 dB are starting to be many.
