Issues with audio quality

I'm in the process of trying to transfer videos from video cassette tapes to my computer and evetually a blank DVD. the videos were recorded on 8mm tapes. They are between 14-23 years old but stlll intact.

i bought a device and hooked it up to my laptop to transfer the files and it works fine aside from that when i record files on my laptop, the sound is very crackly and has a lot of white noise. When i play it on the camcorder i do not have this experience. id really like to clean up the audio if possible and im just not sure if theres anything i can do to fix this.

Thank you

Did you check the recommendation of a capture device in the forums before buying a no brand Chinese capture device? I think that's the problem. Ton's of posts warning against those devices yet people keep buying them for whatever reason.

Sounds like a bad connection/cable.

What capture device are you using? Many USB capture dongles have the audio gain way to high by default, even ones recommended here like the ATI 600 USB. This results in the audio clipping and you get crackling and noise. For many dongles it's possible to adjust it down (in some cases needing to change a windows registry setting.), on a few it's not. Alternatively, many 8mm cameras have headphone outputs where the volume can be adjusted, which could be used (with a minijack to rca adapter) to lower the volume a bit.
