VHS PAL-N to NTSC before capture?
 

Hello,
I need to capture A VHS with a PAL-N signal... i have regular consumer VCR to playback but i want to convert the signal to NTSC to pasthrough in this way:

PAL-N playback-> (*converter to NTSC) -> panasonic AG1980-> DMR-ES15 -> (USB710/pinnacle)-> virtualdub+huffyuv.

Is this a good idea ? *i have no idea about a converter from PAL-N to NTSC.

That won't work, at least as stated.

The AG-1980 serves no purpose here. The ES15 cannot either, as TBC'ing must be before conversion.

There are some frame TBCs that also do PAL>NTSC, and so you'd be going VCR > TBC+convert > capture card.

The only way to run ES15 is if PAL-N model (which I don't think exists?) So unless the VCR has TBC, you'll be embedding timing errors into the converted signal.

Why don't you capture in PAL-N? PAL-N employs the 625 resolution and 50 field per second just like PAL B/G, D/K, H and I, but on a 6 MHz channel with a chroma sub frequency of 3.582056 MHz, A PAL B/G, D/K should playback the tapes fine. If you must convert you will be doing less damage if you convert PAL-N to regular PAL and capture in PAL.

the problem is ...how to avoid the out of sync when capture ? i don't have a TBC or frame sync to PAL-N signal.
i need to capture 40 minutes and even if i find a pal-n TBC is not a good deal.
let me know if there another way to do it, even if is not a puristic solution.

There are some DVD recorders in PAL-N you just have to look for them and put one in the stream with your PAL-N VCR.

The AVT-8710 and its various Cypress clones support PAL-N. I don't think there is such a thing as a PAL-N VHS recording, the tape itself is standard PAL, just the output is different with the 3.58Mhz subcarrier. It might be easier to import one of the recommended PAL SVHS decks and use that for playback if you have a TBC that supports standard PAL video signals.
