Hey All -

I have been digitizing VHS tapes from the 80s. Have two VCRs, Vidbox VCD01 and my MacBook Pro. Have successfully digitized a big pile of "regular" VHS tapes with this setup. Using two VCRs because one or the other craps out, so I switch machines until both go south, then I open them up and clean them well and am ready to go again.

I'm now down to a bunch of VHS-C cassettes. I have a JVC C-P3U Cassette Adapter (came with the video camera) into which I load the VHS-C cassettes. The Cassette Adapter's only powered function is to load/unload cassettes. It works fine. The problem I need help with is that these VHS-C tapes in the cassette won't play properly.

When the cassette is loaded into my SONY RDR-VX525, the picture displays perfectly in an attached monitor and, through the Vidbox, on my Mac. Sound is VERY low volume and muffled and impossible to hear. I can turn the volume all the way up in Vidbox - and on the monitor - and I just get louder muffled unintelligible sound.

When the same cassette is loaded into my Panasonic PV-966H, I get crystal clear sound and no picture at all. Blank screen.

I have tried switching the cables through all of the variations I can think of, but the problem is the same. It doesn't make any sense to me. I am sure I must be missing something, but I have no clue what it could be. The annoying part is that this setup has worked well through lots of conversion. What is it about the VHS-C cassette that screws up the process?

I would be very grateful for a solution...or even something else to try.

Oh, I did think I could try to use the video camera (JVC-G7U) to do the playback. It eats the tapes and stops as soon as it starts.
