Recording Settings for VCR/DVD Recorder

Hello, this shouldn’t be a long discussion. Just a few quick questions. I’m planning on doing someone VHS to DVD transfers using a Sony VCR/DVD combo recorder I just purchased. My questions are more in regards to what settings I should use when doing the recordings. In most cases I’ll probably have it on SP which is 2 hours. However some videos I have are just slightly over 2 hours. One I know is about 16 minutes past two hours. LP is 3 hours but I’ll likely have reduced quality. Should I stick with SP for those in between tapes or just go LP??

Additionally exactly how much is the size of the recording changed when the recording modes are changed if at all?? I only ask cause most of my blank DVDs are the 4.7 gb ones which holds two hours. However years ago I had someone copy a 3 hour tape to DVD and to my knowledge he also used a VHS/DVD recorder and the finished disc he gave me was on a regular 4.7gb DVD-R.

If you want to do him a favor capture to hard drive, that way you don't have a quality limit.

If I have to do that I will but just for reference I would still like answers to my questions.

For the second question, you can use dual layer DVDs that hold 8.5 GB, though not all DVD-recorders support them.

Yeah I’ve considered those too and sadly most of my times I’ve used those discs haven’t been the best but I’m willing to try them again if the situations necessary.
