Identifying horizontal flicker?

Hi everyone,

Can anyone help me please to identify the problem here?

https://mega.nz/file/yRsHSLzb#1vHgEj...WVBoLKnzLNGabM

It's clearly visible on the upper brighter section of the video. Its doesn't looks like dropouts if I understand what dropouts are. It's the 2nd cassette I have seen it happening in (out of 25 I already captured). Interesting enough - both are pretty "new" (2002) casette compared to other casette I have been capturing so far (80-90). Because It doesn't happen on any of the other captures - I'm assuming it's a tape problem? is there anything I can do about is post-capture?

Thanks!

That's source related, although a VCR with line TBC/DNR can help remove most of the vertical wiggle and chroma artifacts.

Thank you. By source you mean the VCR? Why it's only presentable on some tapes and not all of them? Is it something I can fix post-capture? or the only way is to ingrate TBC into my setup?

Source is tape not VCR. A good VCR can fix some of it but does not get rid of all of it. External TBC will not fix that type of artifacts, you need a better VCR with line TBC and DNR.

Thank you for explaining that. At the moment, because It's only 2 tapes, I'm not sure I'm going to invest in better VCR. Perhaps If I will encounter more tapes along the project I'm working on, that will be a valid option on the table.

I think that for now, I will capture the Video with the flickering. It's not amazing, but it's still view-able. I will those videos and will do more research about it. Is the official name for that is "Vertical Wiggle"? I'll search the Forum here. Maybe there's a way to post-processing some of that out.

Thanks again!

In order for Site Staff to view samples, either
- attach a tiny clip to a post,
- or use Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, or Apple iCloud

No Mega, etc.
Those sites have historically been filled with malware, often from shady ad networks.
Countdown timers, slow downloads, etc -- we don't have time for that.

Oh, I must have missed it on the site-rules. Here's a Google Drive link. Feel free to edit the original post with the proper Google Drive link:

Thank you.

EDIT: By the way. I just encountered the same problem again. But this time it's not the whole tape. The Tape has 4 events. All events are photographed from a amateur video camera my father owned. The first 3 event, looks perfect. That "Jitter" only showing on the 4th event, and starts exactly in the moment the event starts. (couple of seconds after event 3 which has no jitter). So I'm starting to think maybe it's just the Video Camera playing tricks on the end of it's life (and therefore I see those on recently new tapes and not the very old tapes).

After capturing around 50 VHS-C tapes, I feel I can pretty much say it's a problem with the Video Camera. We used to same video Camera from 1991 to 2003, and from all the content from 2002 and moving forward, suffer from that. I wonder if this can happen due to the age or damage to the Camera?

I'm attaching another, better example of the problem to the post from Disney World (because who doesn't like Disney World? :-)).

I'm trying to understand, if a new VHS with build in DNR is the only option. Because according to latreche34 it will not get rid of the problem completely, and I'm not sure if a price of a DNR VHS worth the difference (as I don't know what the difference would be and that's like buying a cat in a sack).

Is there some sort of post-processing DNR filter that will achieve the same results? Also, some people mentioned that various VHS sources acts differently. Is it possible another VHS will get rid of problem? or that not a direction worth seeking?

Thank you!
