Canopus ADVC 110 vs August VGB 100?
 

Hi all.
I have been doing further research on this forums since my last post here. To begin with, I am not particularly tech skilled, I am just average. But I'd like some suggestions to achieve a decent quality capture of VHS and video 8.

My equipment is the following
- VCR: Samsung SV 645 X (PAL)
- OS: Windows 10 (potentially even Windows XP)

My doubts:
1. Do you have any thoughts on whether to use Canopus ADVC 110 or August VGB 100 as capture cards?
2. Should I use a TBC? And if so, what is a good one which is not too expensive?
3. Is Virtual dub a good software to use on bot XP and Windows 10?

You probably don't need TBC with the ADVC but the quality will be DV, You will certainly need an external TBC with August VGB 100 (easycrap) but you will be able to capture lossless (better than DV). It's your decision.

The VGB 100 used to be based on the same internals as the Diamond VC500, but the most recent ones use something different judging by the website. Maybe they swapped to something empia-based instead.

As has been discussed numerous times on the forums - cheap/budget option is to get a panasonic (or alternatively newer sony/pioneer DVR) to pass the video through for stabilization. If you want the best you can get you want one of the suggested SVHS VCRs with TBC + external TBC.

Conexant chips are pretty lousy. So, not that card.

ADVC DV boxes are passable for PAL, DV color loss (but not as bad as NTSC). Close to DVD-Video, a variant 4:2:0.

But it's still hard to beat a good lossless SD card.

For TBC, there are budget options. The ES10/15 is a good start, and it's half of a TBC(ish) setup. The ES10/15 still is not a TBC, can drop frames, and has other issues. Add a DVK, as the DVK+ES10/15 setup can be 99% as effective as true TBC. though with side effects on the ES10/15 (posterization, aggressive NR even when "off", PAL lumna issues). But it's better than nothing, and good for budgets. Not best, but sometimes you can skate by with not-best.

As stated, more ideal is quality S-VHS VCR with line TBC + the external framesync TBC. But is has costs. Worthwhile costs, mind you.
