What Euro plug do I need for green AVT-8710?

Hopefully some Euro-users can help me with this.

I recently bought a green AVT-8710, but it will not have a European plug. So I will need to buy this myself. Does anyone have any tips on which adapter I should get to get to properly use the AVT-8710? Preferably a Dutch resource would be even better.

you can use any DC power supply within the range of 12v to 15v 500mA to 600mA
outer=positive, inner = negative

NB Please please remember to get one that is CENTRE NEGATIVE ( or often referred to as Inner Negative )

this is where people go wrong, as most normal PSU's in the UK and Europe are Centre Positive

good luck, you should find something for less than 10 euros !

1.25A is the upper limit of amps, found on some OEM PSUs.

I still say contacting CYP Europe may yield fruit. http://www.cypeurope.com
They were the official importer of the Cypress CTB-100 and CTB-100G, which is what this was before rebadged.

The black AVT-8710 has the same power ratings, as do/did some other Cypress gear.

The other option is a branded PSU, center-positive, using a polarity reversal cable. I've used those, can confirm this works. (But note it must be good PSU, good reversal cable.)

- No unbranded units, not a "for __" Chinese adapter
- No multi-volt model (those with little dials to pick volts), as it always has noise, (power leaks, poor shielding)

Hopefully another Europe user has details on exactly what and where. I know others here in the forum are there, and use this exact green units. Some even in Netherlands specifically.

From the wording of your message it sounds like you do not yet have the AVT-8710 in-hand. Do you have any photos that show several views of the included power adapter? The markings on it would confirm whether it is capable of 220V operation. If so, then you simply need a plug adapter to get it working in the Netherlands. I have the CTB-100 (European version of the AVT-8710) and it came with a dual voltage power supply so I just needed to get a US plug adapter for it. Not sure if the green AVT-8710 did though.

If you need a replacement AC adapter, it's a very standard power rating--12V 500ma. But the problem is that Cypress designed the power plug on these to be center/tip negative, which is the reverse of what the vast majority of other AC adapters use. It's certainly not an insurmountable problem, but just means you can't simply swap in the adapter with one leftover from an old router or something. You could solve it by cutting off the barrel connector, reversing it and splicing it back on, or you can purchase an inexpensive adapter that goes on the barrel end that reverses the polarity. Or if you're willing to buy a new adapter, you should be able to find one that is 12V center negative--you just have to make sure you specifically look for a center negative adapter. Most adapters have a mark like this printed on the label: https://i.stack.imgur.com/uJYvd.jpg

Hopefully someone else who's in Europe can give you more specific advice on where to buy what you need. Congrats on the purchase!

EDIT: I was too slow typing! You already got some good advice above.

The TBC had the 12V 1.25A 110V North American plug. It does not have non-NA ratings, no 220-240V..

Thanks for the input guys! So far I've been able to find 12V 500ma center negative adapters, but they seem to be non-branded. So not sure if the quality will be good. Not been able to find a branded unit so far.

I will also try to contact CYP Europe to see if they can help.

Alternately, if you can find a good quality 5V 12V (sorry for the typo) 500ma (or higher--500ma is just the minimum, but you can use a 1A or anything >500ma) with a center positive pin, you can purchase an inexpensive adapter to reverse the polarity to center negative. I am linking one on the USA amazon site just for reference--perhaps you can search for something similar in your area:

If electronics web-stores/distributors like distrelec/elfa, digikey, mouser and similar have easily searchable large selections of power supplies, so you should be able to find something of decent quality there. I think I used distrelec has it's distrubution center in the Netherlands even. Many of the supplies they sell have reversible plugs which can be set to centre negative and centre positive on demand.

Thanks! Using a polarity reversal cable will give me more options to buy a new adapter. It would be more preferably than getting a power supply with a reversible plug right? I think lordsmurf mentioned those might output noise.

bookemdano 01-01-2021 12:42 PM

Given how expensive and rare these things are, probably best to get a high quality power supply for it! So yeah, probably wise to stay away from the interchangable tip multi-output voltage adapters, though they can be a handy thing to have in the toolkit--I have several.
