I apologize if this is a foolish question but I recently located a moderately priced Panasonic DMR-EZ17. I know the DMR-ES10/15 have some similar qualities to a TBC, albeit not a preferable solution as a permanent TBC as Lord Smurf has mentioned in the past. How could I tell if the DMR-EZ17 model acts similarly to the DMR-ES10/15, and does anyone happen to know if it does?

The DMR-EZ17 model has the same imputs as the DMR-ES15, one imput on the front, as well as an in/out port on the back for composite and S-Video, which is why I thought it may be similar. Thank you all for your time.

I've used one of the HDD models from the same lineup which works similarly to the ES10 in most cases (EH57 PAL). It seems they used a different chipset from LSI in the EZ17 though (the EH57 and ES10/15 use panasonic system/video chips), so maybe it behaves more like the older LSI-based ES20 which uses here and on videohelp has found to not be particularly effective.

^ This.

Whatever exists is so weak as to be mostly worthless.

Again, "TBC" is a wide term, and can mean almost anything. So we must specify the type of TBC, and how it reacts to the consumer sources we're trying to transfer. Panasonic is pretty lousy, outside of ES10/15, and seemingly also some PAL models (seemingly based on the ES15). Terrible quality DVD recorders, harms image quality.

This ES10/15 itself harms quality some, but what matters is the net correction. It was never suggested as a "TBC replacement", since it's not a TBC, but it can provide the functionality, especially in combo with the DVK. It's a budget solution when actual TBCs cannot be located, or refuse to be purchased.
