I have a tape recorded in South Africa is it PAL? The tape will kind of play on my Panasonic Ag1980P, but will not play at all on my JVC S7600U. The colors seem way off and their is some issues for sure. Uploaded sample in Matrox avi if anyone needs I can convert the video to a different format.

South Africa the country or just south Africa region, There is two standards in the south, PAL and SECAM, from the above sample it looks like SECAM or poorly dubbed from SECAM into PAL.

Hard to say tape says it was recorded in South Africa.

I had a tape which my AG-1980P would play, barely, about 30 seconds at a time. I suspected it was PAL, and shortly thereafter was able to acquire a PAL VCD as an eBay special. Yep, it was PAL. Suspect the same is true of yours.

What VCD has to do with the tape ????

VCD = Video Cassette Duplicator (a Sony SVO-965P, but also capable of playback). With that machine I was able to confirm that the tape which my AG-1980P would only play in fits and starts was in fact a PAL tape.

You can’t just steal an abbreviation used for video compact disc and expect everyone to guess it, Anyway I firmly believe that tape was a mini SECAM cassette and was dubbed to a bigger cassette in PAL, I know how SECAM chroma looks like.

Very possible; I've never even seen a SECAM tape. Sorry about the confusion.

That reminds me of a tech joke.

I don't remember specific, but...

Teen grandkid writes grandma txt.
Kid: "My pet rabbit died".
Grandma: "I'm so sorry, LOL!"
Kid: ...?
Grandma: "Are you okay?"
Kid: "I can't believe you wrote that. I don't even know how to respond to that."
Grandma: ...?
Kid: "Um, do you know what LOL means?"
Grandma: "Sure I do, LOTS OF LOVE!"
