Hey Folks

A pretty outdated concept I know, but what software would I use, in 2020, preferably on a modern mac, to stream an H264 file to DV tape via Firewire? Anything I Google talks about importing/capturing.

Thanks

What DV recorder do you plan to use?

Do "modern" MACs even support the older version of firewire/IEEE1394/iLink found on DV/HDV cameras and recorders?

Either my Sony HVZ-Z1 camcorder, or my Sony DSR-11 deck.

I didn't know there were different versions of firewire, but a firewire to Thunderbolt adapter does exist from Apple.

Thanks

I don’t know about Mac but for pc you would use a certain version of Sony Vegas that still have the option Print to tape and the files will be transcoded first to DV/HDV and then put on tape, If you have compliant DV files you can use ScenlizerLive to print them on tape.

^+1.

I cannot speak to MAC, however:

I currently use EDIUS 9.5 as my NLE, and I can Export the time line (i.e., Print to Tape) via firewire provided the project matches DV (frame/field rate and size), the hardware presets in the NLE are correct, and of course the PC is able to communicate with the recorder. That has become more involved these days with new PCs not having a IEEE1394 port, and MS abandoning the legacy IEEE1394 protocols with Win8 and newer, and newer software not speaking IEEE1394.

Best to research the forums dedicated to your software and recorder to check compatibility between T-bolt, adapters, and your gear. I have read that there are some issues with backward compatibility as the MAC evolves its own way.
