I did a VHS capture improvised with what I have currently. I used Vdub for the lossless capture and compressed it down with Vdub with a few blur and blend filters. Are there any frame or TBC issues? Are there any suggestions for improvement?

AG1980 is playing the tape using a different adapter to the computer.

It's hard to tell through all of the post-capture processing and the digital artifacting whether it was a good capture. If you could use Avidemux to losslessly clip out a short segment from the source capture, we could take a look at it.

Uploaded a shoter lossless uncompressed clip from the same video? I added a few screenshots from the lossless but the scenes are so fast I don't think you can tell if it is good or bad.

That video is MJPEG, not lossless.

What do you mean it is not lossless? That files is exactly what I got with Vdub capture Avi. No recompression in Video settings.

Even at 15Mb/s I could still see areas of picture retained for several frames which is an obvious form of compression algorithms, Also it's hard to examine the frame for line timing errors since it's cropped all around, Analog sources can only be cropped from 720 to 704 and mask the remaining, And there is no aspect ratio flag in the video file, As far as frame timing it looks stable to me.

Lossless AVI is 4:2:2 with no codec, That's an AVI file in a MJPG codec.

Its not cropped at all. Oddly my improvised capture method removed even the green line you get at the top or bottom of the video typically you get when it entered the computer. How do I add huffy to vdub? I don't see it in my compression options. I have the huffy folder. I added another clip using another software. I guess this is lossless but not sure.

I finally got the other codecs to work on Vdub. I just noticed 2 devices are showing up for my capture card in Vdub. Choosing the 2nd one fixed the missing lossless codecs issue in Vdub. Updating my Vdub to version 2 fixed my preview capture issue. Now my question is how big of a sample do you need to tell if my capture is good or bad because with a true lossless codec even a 30 sec sample is 1 GB in size and the limit here is 99 MBs.

HuffYUV should be around 10 MB/sec.

You need to choose the correct "video standard" setting for your VCR. Here is the VirtualDub setup guide.

1080p and 60fps is wrong.
That explains the insanely huge file sizes.

Do this:
- resolution = 720x480 (NTSC) / 720x576 (PAL)
- framerate = 29.97fps (NTSC) / 25fps (PAL)

The OP doesn't have a clue on what he is doing,

Frame is cropped, video looks de-interlaced, HD resolution, To be able to help you, you need to list the hardware and the workflow used so we can direct you to the right path.

He'll get to where he needs to be, once he follows the VirtualDub setup guide. There's a lot of misinformation on the Internet.

This is what happens when you don't stick to REC. 601. A member over at VH who used OBS and ended up with Rec.709, now he has to recapture all his tapes despite all the warnings there to never use OBS, I know the OP is using Vdub but I'm not sure about the capture hardware, I smell some HDMI workflow.

It seems when I was messing with Vdub trying to get the lossless codecs to show up the size got set to 1920x1080. Yes I am using a HDMI capture card. I did mention I improvised with what I have.

AG1980 -> S-Video to HDMI convertor with supposed digital TBC circuit -> HDMI to Component -> Component to HDMI -> Avermedia HD2 .

I don't need to use HDMI to Component -> Component to HDMI but that seems to get rid of the green line that shows up at the top or bottom of the video screen when doing analog to digital conversions and it gets rid of the HDCP signal emitted by the S-Video to HDMI convertor I am using. Reason I said I don't need to use these adapters is because the Avermedia HD2 has an option to turn off HDCP. Once that is off then you get almost any video via HDMI on your computer.

Here is the new sample I am not sure I can reduce the frame rate to 29.97 as the S-Video to HDMI convertor converts the video to 60.

Is that the weird 'shifting' seen in the faces, where parts of the head that I think should be moving are stationary but the eyes and mouth are moving, making it look like a cheap 70s-era cartoon?

I'm seeing some ghost images, such as when the red light moves left across the frame:

vlcsnap-2021-04-26-10h25m52s270.png

You can also see the ripples in the vertical lines of the vehicle, especially near the hinge:

Worst of all are the diagonal lines in Steven Seagal's face:

What diagonal lines on Steven Segal's face? Regarding the ripples are you talking about exactly beside the hinge you can see barely only if you squint at it real long? Do you see any issue with this clip other than it is MP4 and not lossless? Issue meaning video quality issues.

Deinterlacing errors like this:

vlcsnap-2021-04-26-14h36m48s559.png

Also, it looks like a smoothing filter was applied. So instead of seeing a lot of grain (video noise), the actors look a little bit plasticky, in addition to the ghosting effect that we also saw on the lossless clip.
