All synergies exist for 32 bit windows, not 64 bit windows.
Thank you jwillis for the detailed write-up. I will go with a reinstall of 32-bit W7 SP1.

I have been building myself desktops (though less frequently these days) since the days of Win98; I can manage my way around re-installing and working with W7. I will be capturing to a 1TB external drive and do the post processing on the Win10 partition. The current hardware is from ~2014 and supports UEFI.

We run Windows7 64-bit (I think!) on our capture machines without issues, but we're doing DV captures so to paraphrase Gertrude Stein "A Firewire port, is a Firewire Port, is a Firewire Port..."
I have been successfully digitizing my Hi8 tapes on my W10 64-Bit using ADVC-110; wanted to recapture them to raw 4:2:2 and so decided to go with USB-710.

Thank you all for the inputs and pointers. I did a fresh install of Win7 SP1 on 2 PCs and got VirtualDub working and capturing stably.
  1. Installed Win7 SP1 32-bit and turned off all updates. Without the network drivers, it was offline anyway.
  2. Installed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 (Offline Installer) - NDP452-KB2901907-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe : CrossbarThing requires .NET 4.0 or newer.
I. Further steps for laptop with Intel graphics
  1. Installed Intel display driver
  2. Tested Previews/Histograms/Capture working well for 1.9.11, 1.10.4, FM_40121 & VDub2_44282
II. Further steps for desktop with NVidia graphics card
  1. Did not install NVidia drivers on the desktop; NVidia drivers seem to cause VirtualDub to crash.
  2. Tested Previews/Histograms/Capture : All versions of VirtualDub were stable but could not reliably get Preview and histograms working; Capture was fine.
  3. Installed ffdshow as suggested by https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/...during-Capture. Did not tweak any settings; I now have Preview/Histogram/Capture all working stably with 1.9.11. I do not have any clues on why and how does ffdshow help here.
I have now successfully captured about 90 minutes of video in one go using 1.9.11 . I will post my queries and updates.
