That's not accurate.

Some cards do have 640x480 hardware limitation, but it's mostly ancient late 90s capture hardware, or cheap Chinese 2000s cards (USB, PCI, other). I know of several USB1 cards that did 640x480, but I forget the names now, that was literally decades ago.

So while not accurate, nothing you'd see today. None of that stuff will run on modern Win7/8/10, and in fact many quite working due to Windows XP, being 95/98/98SE/ME hardware only.

In 2021, this is trivia, a footnote. :2cents:

While they do have an output limitation I can guarantee you the ADC chip inside samples at 704+16, The chip design was stndardized according to SMPTE 601 back then and capture card manufacturers don't have the option to choose whatever sampling resolution they want, they can choose the ouput resolution though via software or hardware resizing.

For playback I do not want ANY encoding whatsoever. Just a simple DAR change. traal's post above has put my mind at ease on this matter.

The only encoding I want to do is from the raw capture file to a YouTube friendly mkv/mp4. I tried the ffmpeg scripts you provided, but it didn't seem to be what I'm after. My interlaced, 720x480 NTSC AVI became an interlaced, 720x480/720x528 1.36 ratio MP4.

You'd mentioned earlier about giving YouTube a 1440x1080 file? Can you break it down step by step?

HuffYUV AVI > AviSynth script > ffmpeg script > YouTube friendly file

The scripts I provided have SAR for resolutions 704x480 and 704x576, they don't work on 720 files, And those are not for youtube, they are for playback on TV's and smart devices.

For youtube I only de-interlace and do frame edge work and upload the lossless files (kind of, the lossy part is de-interlacing but still near lossless), no encoding, Here are some videos.

Yeah, now we're talking! They look great. Could you post the script you use for those?

edit: does YouTube work better with the lossless files, or is that just your preference? My Australian internet connection would much prefer to upload H264 files, but your uploads really do look nice. I might have to do some comparisons.

Thanks, I had no idea about that!

As I said I use AvsPmod a script editor and load the file to it, Then I do the crop visually and resize, the resulting file is uploaded to youtube:

Code:

AVISource("C:\Users\Path\File.avi")
QTGMC(Preset="Fast")
prefetch(4)
Crop(#, #, -#, -#)
LanczosResize(1440, 1080)

I downloaded AvsPmod earlier today, it looks good. Haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but I'll do so during the week and try out your script. Thanks heaps for your help!

You would need to manually add crop and resize for each video and they are both at the AvsPmod menu, Because each video has unique edges and cannot be applied to all videos, It also uses vdub2 as a dependency, once you satisfied with your results hit the arrow button and it loads the video into vdub2 and from there save as HuffYUV and upload that to youtube.

Tip: Since you are resizing you can crop all the way around to the bare active video area, just make sure your ratio is not far away from 704:480 for NTSC and 704:576 for PAL, up to 4 pixels miss match is okay.

In other words, If for example you crop down V to 474, your H should be around 696 +/- 4 pixels, The same analogy for PAL.
Important: never do this on an interlaced video, only de-interlaced, that's why the QTGMC script is put in the first line.

Great, thanks again. I've got AvsPmod up and running and it's great so far. I'd been put off getting into too much AviSynth stuff because it was daunting (still is). But having the video preview is a big help.

Is there any reason to use LanczosResize rather than Spline36Resize (or others)? I hadn't come across Lanczos previously, and have used Spline36 for the (limited) resizing I've done so far.

I think it is the best (least damaging) so far just like QTGMC for de-interlacing.

kingbean 08-02-2021 02:40 AM

Thanks. I'll have a play around with all the info I've taken from this thread and hopefully be able to get some good results!

Always love SAR/DAR threads. Take whatever you thought you knew, and question it all over again lol
