So I recently bought a Hauppauge USB Live2. For a few of my VHS, I have noticed that the audio is natively too loud.
I read in the link below that there seems to be a registry hack that could fix this, however I have not been able to find it.

Lordsmurf, do you happen to know how to perform this registry hack?
I also read somewhere that registry hacks might need to be re-done every time the Hauppauge is re-inserted into my laptop. I do not seem to find where I read this (it could likely have been for another Hauppauge capture device). Would you happen to know if this is the case for the USB Live 2?
Thanks again.

I don't think it exists for this card. It's specific to cards using empia chips while this one uses a conexant chip afaik. The drivers were lazily written, haven't seen any way to adjust the audio level on the conexant-based usb dongles in windows even though the hardware supports it. (The linux drivers let you adjust audio fine from what I remember, though the settings aren't stored on the dongle itself.) So, you need some external volume control or attenuator to avoid clipping. Alternatively, if you happen to be using a vcr or camcorder with a headphone out, those usually let you adjust the output volume.

I forgot to mention it in my first post, but I am using an Asus laptop with Windows 10.
Well, that is quite unfortunate. At least there is a solution with external volume control as suggested. I might need to try that then.
Before doing so, the VCR I am using is a Panasonic NV-HS950. Would you happen to know if there is a way to adjust the level of volume through RCA-output on the VCR? I have not been able do that, but perhaps I am just missing something. I have a remote control for the VCR.

You can't normally adjust the volume of RCA outputs on vcrs (though some older ones may have internal adjustments). The HS950 has a headphone output you could try though (using a minijack to rca adapter) which does have volume knob on the front.

I'm not sure if this hack is the same as the ATI 600 USB audio registry edit. The audio is maxed at 256, and needs to be put at 128 (50%). The reason is due to no audio control in the driver, poor oversight by ATI and others.

Thank you hodgey for the advice. Using the volume knob for the head phones output, the audio volume entering the Hauppauge is much lower, thus lower when capture. I tried to capture a few samples of the movie where the audio was clipped, and I seem to have found a suitable level now without any clipping. I turned the knob down almost 50 % as mentioned by lordsmurf.
I will try to capture the complete movie to see the results.
Thanks again.
