AJA Lhi works well, but is grainer than old slide film will upload a sample today. I am thinking because I am running the S-video though a Black Magic Analogue to SDI adapter this is introducing noise possibly?

Higher details reveal more noise, If you want washed out details with dull looking picture you can achieve it in post. If your VCR/Camcorder has DNR use it and see how it looks.

Looks good to me apart from some motion trailing, I assume caused by VCR temporal DNR.

^+1. First be careful where you post this lest the SPCA or PETA come after you for dog abuse .

I do not see any unusual grain in what I downloaded. But what is the source material. How was it shot, processed and played prior to capture?

FWIW: the scene could be low light, and many camcorders added a lot of gain to form imges which could result in sensor pixel thermal noise/slightly different dark currents becoming visible as a grain, often a fixed grain pattern.
