I'm using a pinnacle usb on a laptop running windows 8.1 x64 (since thats the oldest I have) all using composite cables. I can change audio and video compression just fine, but overlay and preview don't work. I can still hit capture and it will show its capturing something but as soon as i end the capture it immediately stops responding and will stay like that for hours. It could just be that the os is not cooperating but im not really sure how to fix it, any suggestions?
also an even funner problem is that it will capture straight from VCR just fine, but when i try to use a DMR15 as a passthrough it wont capture at all

In this exact case, try VirtualDub2.

Just as a test, not as the production capture just yet.

While VirtualDub2 has serious issues, it does sometime cooperate with your exact card, though you still need to take some precautions. That's not important just yet, one step at a time, first test capture.

Apparently I was just being a fool and forgot which input is which. Capture works fine now on both versions of VirtualDub, though now the video stutters and jumps a lot and even seems to lower in fps, but I feel it's safe to assume that's because I'm using a dmr15 instead of an actual tbc. I guess the new question is can I fix the jumping with VirtualDub or do I need a tbc, and/or need to upgrade my laptop to an SSD?
