I am trying to capture video from Sony DCR- HC21 (digital camera) using USB port (i do not have firewire port).
I have Honestech hardware AV to USB adapter. As Honestech software doesnt give de-interlacing, so use VirtualDUB software.
I used Windows 7, 32 bit to Windows 10, 64 bit. VirtualDUB ver. 1.10 and newer ver. VirtualDUB2_44282.
No mater how VirtualDUB is setup i cannot get more then 25 fps, only two settings: 720x480 MJPG and 480x320 YUY2 (images attached)
I have also very limited options in other pull down menus.
What am i doing wrong?
Is my adapter the problem?

Where is that VirtualDub window from? I don't even know what that is.

- in capture AVI mode
- Video > Capture pins/filters (check both, I always forget which is which without looking)
- bottom right of main window, select fps.
- under Video > set Custom Format, change/verify capture resolution

Honestech is a really crappy card, barely above infamous Easycap or Elgato (aka Easycrap, Elcrapo). You will not have a good experience, nor good quality.

- Did my advice help you? Then become a Premium Member and support this site.
- For sale in the marketplace: TBCs, workflows, capture cards, VCRs

I bought an EasyCAP card just to see how bad it is.

Confirmed, it only supports 25fps and maybe some lower frame rates. I couldn't get it to take 29.97. There are a two different ways to change it, but none of them worked (Video > Capture Pin, Capture > Settings).

YUY2 is 480x320 only. MJPG is 720x480, 640x480, or 480x320.

There are no brightness/contrast settings for capture, also no way to switch between composite and S-Video.

This is all using the DirectShow driver with composite. I can't use S-Video because 2 of the pins on the capture card are blocked.

Using the VFW driver, it supports 29.97 but there's no video, it's just a black screen.

Ok, I believe you now, LordSmurf. EasyCAP really is a piece of crap.

If you're looking for a good alternative, I found the Avermedia EZMaker 7 to be decent. Worked great on my Win 11 system, and video quality was pretty good.
