Great info and yes, I see what you mean about all the wikipedia-like bull*** spreading on the net via know-it-all clueless individuals or number freaks (like when judging entirely the output quality by calculating PSNR), having been one myself...

Sounds good.

Just as a re-cap, I think you'll do well to get
  • a VCR or two, one from the JVC series, and then an AG-1980P
  • a TBC (if your capture card has any "copy protection" type issues)
  • some audio software, specifically Goldwave
  • some freeware tools, like VirtualDub and Audacity
That will expend the current budget until later.

Future upgrades can include a proc amp, an audio board, maybe a detailer. A DVD recorder might even come in handy for some fully off-computer work.
