The following method has been known to work for recovering the video from:
  • DVDs that crashed while being finalized; This probably means you were using a low-grade/low-quality DVD blank
  • DVDs can no longer be finalized for whatever reason; (1) You may not own the recorder anymore, or (2) The recorder is now broken. Please note that is is ALWAYS PREFERABLE to find another machine is the same or similar make/model, and finalize on that unit. Sometime units from "other brands" can finalize discs too, such as how many modern Panasonic and JVC units can often interchangeably finalized media okay.
The following free software is needed for this process:
To recover your video, perform the following steps.
  1. Open ISOBuster
  2. Select DVD drive (NOTE: If you can see "Track 01" in the left hand pane, it can recover at least some of your data.)
  3. Open Options menu
  4. Select "Image File"
  5. Select "ISO/BIN/TAO" Tab
  6. Uncheck both boxes
  7. Close dialog window
  8. Right click on "Track 01" in left-hand pane
  9. Select "Extract Track 01"
  10. Select "Extract User Data (*.tao, *.iso, *.wav)"
  11. Choose where you want to save the data. (It will copy everything it can find as one big .tao file)
  12. Use VOBEdit to open and then demultiplex the .tao file
  13. Edit the demultiplexed video using your favorite MPEG editor, such as Womble MPEG Video Wizard.
