Seeking advice on an audio equalizer
 

I want to get a decent audio equalizer for real-time adjustment for the linear audio track on my VHS tapes. I haven't really decided on my budget, but I don't imagine I need anything too fancy for my purposes. My plan is to put it in line between my VCR and DVD-recorder for on the fly EQ. Mostly just to boost the middle of the range and the highs.

Any standouts in the field or particular brands that work well for this purpose?

You won't go wrong with Behringer, Mackie, Edirol or Tapco audio mixers.

Note that while audio mixers go up in cost, they mostly begin to offer effects and features that are important to musicians only -- not videographers. We can get by quite well with basic mixer gear, to provide some degree of external hardware control to the audio, such as gain and basic EQ.

And then you can either skip software corrections, or simply have better source to start with for the software phase of restoration, filtering and improving your audio.
