Hi,

I'm trying to transfer VHS tapes to DVD.

I have a Mac Pro desktop running 10.6.8, with dual 2.66 GHz Dual Core Xeon processors.
13 GB of RAM 667 MHz
More than enough hard drive space.

I have Adobe Premiere Pro editing software.

I installed a Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro HDMI/analog PCIe capture card.

My VHS player has a composite output that I connected to the Blackmagic card.

When capturing from the VHS, random flickers - brief capture loss - occurs throughout the digital video file. These dropouts are not on the VHS tapes themselves.

I see others have had this problem as well:

A proposed solution of converting the composite connector to an S-Video connector is here:

http://www.thedigilabs.com/news/Blac...lved-1300.aspx

Does this work? There's a comment at the bottom of that page from a user who said it didn't work for him.

Maybe this would be OK?

Any advice would be very welcome. I've spent several hours on trying different capture settings, and nothing has worked.

Thanks in advance,

Carl

This also describes what VHS source video tends to look like when a transfer is attempted without using a full-frame external TBC between the VCR and capture card.

Do you have a TBC? If so, which model.

If not, then that's what you really need to solve this problem.
And read more about TBCs here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...time-base.html

I have a new DataVideo TBC-100 available for $300 + shipping. (That's a bargain price!)

Problem solved. I bought a AVT-8710 from B&H, and have seen no more dropouts.

Thanks,

Carl

Did this end up working properly...
... or did it end up like these: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...-8710-doa.html

Let us know if the AVT-8710 issues have been sorted out yet by the manufacturer.

No, it turned out to have the same ghosting issues everyone else has. I sent it back, and got a replacement yesterday that I haven't tried yet. I will report back after I have.

I specified to B&H that I wanted a newer serial number or a refund. They sent me an even older serial.

Original serial: 2238406015221
New serial: 2238406014224

This one was better, but still flawed.

No ghosting problem, and it fixed the dropout that was occurring during VHS capture without the external TBC.

But. It causes the picture to stutter intermittently when there's a lot of change in the picture. Personally, I'd rather watch a transfer with a dropout or two, compared to one that stutters. Too bad, I was hoping for a good TBC to fix the dropout problem.
