The home page of the VideoGlide website says:
  • 640 x 480, 25 frames per second PAL/SECAM video capture.
Yet when I install the software and check out the VideoGlide ReadMe, it says:
  • Video captured from PAL/SECAM sources is 720 x 576 at 25 frames per second.
That resolution option also appears under the Record menu along with a host of others.

Assuming I've got a capture device like the ATI Wonder thing, is it possible to determine at what resolution VideoGlide is capturing? By selecting the 720 x 576 option, could it be capturing at 640 x 480 and upscaling behind the scenes?

When I'm eventually capturing, I'll be happy accepting bit-rates much less than a lossless bit-rate, but a capture at lower resolution, followed by upscaling, bothers me.

From what I remember when testing it what was available seemed to vary depending on the capture device, the older diamond VC500 mac with a saa7113 chip supported 720x576 while the newer one with an all-in-one empia chip only had a 640x480 option in the app. Most likely it doesn't capture and upscale as that would be rather odd though I never inspected the captures in full detail as I never really used it for anything serious.

eMPIA bridges (ie, every ATI 600 USB and clone, and many other USB lousy/low-quality cards) only support 640x480 max with the software, for whatever bad coding reason, so Videoglide therefore should be considered NTSC-only for most cards.

PAL x480 is messy, odd, never do that.

Mac is simply not the proper tool for video capture. Never was, probably never will be.
Linux is equally the wrong tool.
Windows is the OS for capture, especially legacy XP/7 as video capture was mostly a task of that era.
